In Reply To 2+2 TT Build Finished!! (First Post Since 2005!) posted by reefatx on March 10, 2012 at 05:00 PM

Message :Well as of today I have put the first 1000 miles on the 2+2 Ive been working on the last year! The fact I didn't make a single post and haven't owned a Z since high school attests to the purpose of the Search button
:A little background about me- Before starting this build the most in depth car repair I had done was an alternator on my Dinan M3 when Bmw quoted me almost $1400 for the job.
:Back to the Car- I was selling a motorcycle (Gsxr-600) I owned and was getting a bunch of bs offers and trade offers. So I rewrote my ad, and specifically put "No trade offers unless TT Z or E36M3". Well, sure enough two days later I got an email with someone wanting to trade for my bike. He had a 300zx 2+2 that had been converted to TT. Upon checking out the car everything looked good initially so we did the trade. Upon getting the car back, I slowly started tinkering with it and checking things out. More and more things I found on it were done wrong or half assed. Well after redoing the timing, checking for leaks, fuel filter, vacuum hoses, etc, I redrove the car. It ran like a bat out of hell, So I turned up the boost a little bit and had a blast. It ran great until about a week later when it leaned out and I burnt a ringland on cylinder 6. Fast forward 3-4 months- turns out the previous owner had cheaped out and left the NA fuel pump in the car (barely capable of stock boost levels on the TT).
:So here I am with a Z with no compression and everyone I talked to about it wanted SERIOUS money to rebuild the car for me. Well after looking at it everyday for a few months I decided to do the rebuild myself, with nothing but my iPad, 3ZC and TT.net. Before I start I want to say thank you to all the people who helped, primarily Jake who let me use his shop and lift, Rob who helped me pull out the drivetrain the first day (in less than 5 hours) and Kevin (The owner of Z Clinic here in Austin,TX [ www.zclinic.net ] ) who answered all my questions when the forums just didn't seem to help.
:Sorry for the long story, none of my friends will listen to me talk about the Z anymore :-)
:oh btw make sure the bevel on the crankshaft pulley faces outwards, don't ask how i know this :-(

:Motor out:

:Taking things off:

:After I got the heads off this is what I discovered:

:At this point I then took it to a highly reccomended Machine shop here is Texas, Mark G's Auto Machine. This guy is great, fast work, fair pricing, and def knows his stuff. He mainly builds drag car and drag boat motors.

:After reading a couple threads about painting the plenum I decided to go with VHTs Wrinkle Red, It turned out great but it takes FOREVER for this paint to cure. Even days later it was still soft and easily damaged.
